- Overview of synaptic transmission. Electrical synapses and gap junctions.
- Electrical coupling and neuronal synchronization in the mammalian brain.
- Chemical synapses I: presynaptic mechanisms. Quantal release of neurotransmitters and the role of calcium in transmitter release.
- Chemical synapses II: Molecular mechanisms of transmitter release.
- Chemical synapses III: postsynaptic mechanisms.
- Neurotransmitters and receptors I: Glutamate.
- Neurotransmitters and receptors II: ACh, GABA, and others.
- Synaptic integration; role of the neuronal dendritic tree.
- Synaptic plasticity.
- Overview of sensory processing: general concepts in sensory physiology; sensory receptors and sensory systems.
- Sensory transduction: thermo- and mechanoreceptors.
- Sensory transduction: nociceptors. Central processing of pain.
- Central processing of information in the somatosensory system.
- Central processing of information in the visual system.
- Practical sessions based on NiA2 software. Synaptic transmission: reversal potentials, inhibitory and excitatory synapses, synaptic integration.

Understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the normal functions of the nervous system.
Understand the basics and efficacy of therapeutic interventions based on scientific evidence.
Using macroscopic, microscopic, molecular, and electrophysiological methods recognize the nervous system's structure and function.

Understand the functional bases of neuronal excitability.
Describe the cellular and molecular bases of neuronal communication and signaling.
Manage the concepts relating to biophysical, cellular, and regulatory mechanisms of synaptic communication.
Identify the mechanisms involved in short- and long-term synaptic plasticity.
Understand the main diagnostic tests used in clinical neurophysiology.
Describe the molecular and cellular bases of synaptic establishment, consolidation, and plasticity.
Describe the different ways of processing in the cerebral cortex.
Identify the properties of sensory processing in cortical receptive fields.
Evaluate how anatomical and functional connectivity of the nervous system is analyzed and how it is reorganized under normal and pathological conditions.

Methodology and grading

Grading

It will be evaluated through a written exam on the contents of the course. It will be necessary to pass this exam (grade equal to or higher than 5.0) to pass the course. The grade obtained in the practical work done with the software "Neurons in Action" will be able to raise the exam grade up to 20%, to obtain the final grade of the course.
