The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department was established in 1998, and is today comprised of 24 professors, associate professors, and part-time lecturers organized among different research groups, in addition to more than a hundred graduate students working in different research areas and university institutes. Its main objectives are to develop and support biochemistry programs for undergraduate and graduate students, train research personnel, and develop basic and applied research in the areas of biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, and biomedicine. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department participates in teaching activities for various degree programs at the faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy (Sant Joan d’Alacant Campus), the Faculty of Experimental Sciences (Elche Campus), and also at the School of Engineering of Orihuela (Orihuela Campus). The department is very active on these university campuses and also at the two main hospitals of Alicante and Elche. It is interesting to note the number of scientific papers published by department members in international journals as well as the number of doctoral theses they have directed as a criterion of quality.
