Microorganisms as an extraordinarily diverse group of living beings, presenting their general features but placing special emphasis on those relevant due to being human pathogens. The concept of parasitic organisms, which includes both eukaryotic as well as metazoan microorganisms, grouped together by their way of life as human parasites.
Microorganisms are important part of human physiology. Moreover, they are the cause of a number of disorders called infectious diseases. To understand the homeostasis of the human body, the pathogeny of the infectious diseases and the possibilities for their treatment, the knowledge of microorganisms and their relationship with the human being is essential. These are in the sphere of the fundamentals for medical practice.
Competencies and learning outcomes
- Understand the basics of action, indications, and efficacy of therapeutic interventions based on available scientific evidence.
- Establish the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, applying principles based on the best information available and under conditions of clinical safety.
- Indicate the most appropriate therapy for the most prevalent acute and chronic processes, as well as for patients in terminal stages.
- Raise and propose appropriate preventive measures for each clinical situation.
- Acquire appropriate clinical experience in hospitals, clinics, and other health care institutions, under supervision, as well as basic knowledge of patient-centered health management and the appropriate use of tests, medications, and other health system resources.
- Know how to use information and communication technologies in clinical, therapeutic, preventive, and research activities.
- Handling laboratory material and basic laboratory techniques.
- Knowledge of the principal infectious agents and their mechanisms of action.
- Understand the indications of biochemical, hematological, immunological, microbiological, anatomopathological, and imaging tests.
- Know the fundamentals of microbiology and parasitology.
- Understand the main techniques of microbiological and parasitological diagnosis and interpret the findings.
- Learn how to obtain and process a biological specimen for examination using different diagnostic procedures.
- Know how to interpret results from laboratory diagnostic tests.
- Learn how to perform disinfection and sterilization techniques.

- 04Students will be able to infere the measures for the control of infections on the bases of the knowledge of pathways and mechanisms for the acquisition and spread of pathogenic agents
- 05Students will be able to distingüis aspects of the morphology, physiology and genetics of the diverse microbial groups
- 06Students will be able to apply experimental methods for the detection and identification of pathogenic agents
- 07Students will be able to describe the basic ideas of biologic behaviourvwhich define the human parasites
- 08Students will be able to describe and apply specific methods for the study of human parasites and its parasitosis
- 09Students will be able to distinguish the specific targets of the microorganisms and metazoa, used in the development of antimicrobial and antiparasitic drugs, and to deduce the mechanisms of resistance to these drugs.

Methodology and grading

THEORY (85% of the course)
- Continuous evaluation: score for: Class attendance (up to 1.5 points out of 5), Interventions and answers (up to 3.5 points out of 5) (50% value of the rating of theory)
- Written examination (50% of theory rating value):
50-70 test questions about the theoretical syllabus. Penalty -0,25 points wrong answers. Value on the written examination: 65%
Long answer part: one or more questions which require a long answer (about 15 minutes of discussion).Value 35% of the written examination. Knowledge and writing with appropriate scientific language are evaluated.
PRACTICES (15% of the course)
- Basic laboratory evaluation by attendance; manual skills; problem solving; presentation of results. Value: 80% of the practical score
- Clinical laboratory: assistance and acquired knowledge is evaluated. 10% of practical score
- Presentations of monographic themes: interest of the content and public disclosure. Value: 10% of practical score
II. EXTRAORDINARY CALL (September)
THEORY (85% of the course)
Written examination (100% value of the rating of theory): Review of short questions, divided into 5 blocks that correspond to the five units of the subject. Each block is corrected to 10 and the weighted average is calculated according to the weight of the unit in the program of the course (19%, 35%, 20%, 11% and 15% respectively for the teaching Units from 1 to 5).
PRACTICES (15% of the course)
To be eligible for this test practices must be approved before.
III. EXTRAORDINARY CALL (December)
Final examination of all the matter of the course (Theory and Practice). It is done in the laboratory of Microbiology.
THEORY (85% of the course):
- Oral exam: a long answer question (value: 3 points) and five short questions (1 or 2 points each) of each of the 5 teaching units of this subject will be formulated.
PRACTICES (15% of the course)
- Laboratory skills: students should perform some of the techniques that are described in the practical program will. Value: 80% of the practical score
- Practical question: reasoned solution to a problem of microbiology. Value: 10% of the practical score
- Presentation of results: brief summary of results of a laboratory test and possible practical application. Value: 10% of the practical score
