Professional interest

The pharmacist needs the knowledge of public health and health education to the population Public Health be one of the practice fields. The Royal Decree 1464/1990 of October 26 by establishing the official university degree in Pharmacy and the general directives of the curriculum leading to the award of that, recognizes "also provide knowledge of Public Health, health education and health-related analysis, necessary in the exercise of pharmacy ".
Law 44/2003 on management of health professions recognizes in Article 2.2.a) to the pharmacy as a health profession graduate level, incumbent upon the activities aimed at the production, storage and dispensing of medications, as well as collaboration in the analytical processes, pharmacotherapeutic and public health surveillance (Article 6.2b). Noting further that the Office of Pharmacy is also a center for health education and prevention.
Furthermore, according to the white paper ANECA the pharmacist must be able to assess the scientific, design experiments, to know the nature and behavior of infectious agents, able to develop hygienic-sanitary analysis related to health in general and food and environmental particular environment, promote rational use of medicines, the relations between food and health and the importance of diet in the treatment and prevention of diseases to health education to the population, both of which are part of the content of the Public Health.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Know the economic, cultural, and social factors affecting the health sciences professions, as well as the economic, ethical, and social implications of professional decisions.
Understand current legislation for the exercise of the profession.
Identify the differences between normal human body function and its changes and determine the impact from demographic, environmental, social, and cultural determinants of the health of a population.
Hypothesize, assess information, and promote viable solutions to cases and professional situations.
Ability to analyze, evaluate, and assess individual and group situations, identify problems, interpret data, and formulate solutions to individual and/or group problems.
Assess information critically and apply the scientific method to improve the profession.

Specific competencies

Promote the rational use of medicines and health products, as well as acquire basic knowledge in clinical management, health economics, and efficient use of health resources.
Intervene in health promotion activities and disease prevention for the individual, family, and community with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary vision of the health-disease process.

Professional competencies

Understand the fundamentals of public health care and intervene in activities of health promotion, disease prevention on individual and collective levels, and contribute to health education, recognizing the health determinants within a population.
Understand ethical and deontological principles and act according to the laws, regulations, and administrative provisions that govern professional practice with other health professionals, acquiring teamwork skills.
Understand oral and written communication techniques, acquiring skills that permit informing the users of pharmacies in terms that are intelligible and appropriate for diverse cultural levels and social environments.

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Project-based learning: Realization of a project to solve a problem, applying acquired learning and promoting abilities related to planning, design, performing activities, and reaching conclusions.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Evaluation criteria:

- Knowledge acquired.

Evaluation instruments:

Theoretical test evaluation: 50-question test = 65%

Practical test evaluation: examination of epidemiology problems = 20%

Continuous evaluation of the subject = 15%

Is necessary to overcome the approved (note = 5) in each of the parties.
