Professional interest

The machine design is one of the core skills in mechanical engineering activity that, in addition to the design activity, allows to understand the functioning of plants and manufacturing processes.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Capacity for drafting, signing, and developing projects within the field of mechanical engineering aimed at construction, remodeling, repair, maintenance, demolition, manufacturing, installation, assembly and/or the operation of structures, mechanical equipment, energy installations, electrical and electronic installations, industrial installations and plants, and manufacturing and automation processes.
Ability to manage the kinds of engineering projects described in the preceding competency.
Knowledge about basic and technological material that enable learning new methods and theories, providing versatility for adapting to new situations.
Ability to manage specifications, regulations, and mandatory standards.
Ability to apply quality principles and methods.
Ability to work within a multilingual and multidisciplinary environment.
Knowledge, understanding, and capacity to apply the necessary legislation in exercising the profession of technical industrial engineer.

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Project-based learning: Realization of a project to solve a problem, applying acquired learning and promoting abilities related to planning, design, performing activities, and reaching conclusions.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

There will be a final exam composed of two parts: one with theoretical questions and the other with numerical problems. The practices of the subject will be assessed through the evaluation of a group work. The final mark will be calculated as the average of the exam note (2/3 of the mark) and mark of the group work (1/3 of the grade). To pass the subject, both marks must be greater than 4. Students who don't deliver the work and request it previously, may opt instead for an additional part of the final exam.
