Professional interest

"Industrial Heating and Cooling" addresses the scientific and technological bases of the energy-related processes in the field of cooling and heating production. Almost all industrial processes require thermal energy transfer.
The study of the thermodynamic properties of the working fluids circulating through industrial devices like water, air, refrigerants, gases and gas mixtures is essential to analyze the behavior of thermal systems. Starting from these properties, the conservation equations of mass and energy transfer are obtained.
Knowledge of refrigeration cycles and psychrometric processes provide the basis for air conditioning systems and industrial refrigeration. For combustion processes, this course examines the basic equations to obtain the levels of temperature and heat transfer in combustion reactions.

General competencies

Capacity for drafting, signing, and developing projects within the field of mechanical engineering aimed at construction, remodeling, repair, maintenance, demolition, manufacturing, installation, assembly and/or the operation of structures, mechanical equipment, energy installations, electrical and electronic installations, industrial installations and plants, and manufacturing and automation processes.
Ability to manage the kinds of engineering projects described in the preceding competency.
Knowledge about basic and technological material that enable learning new methods and theories, providing versatility for adapting to new situations.
Knowledge for making measurements, calculations, assessments, appraisals, surveys, studies, reports, task scheduling, and other similar computer work.

Knowledge about applied thermodynamics and heat transfer. Basic principles and their application towards solving engineering problems.

Methodology

Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

Subject evaluation will be as follows: - FINAL EXAM 80% (minimum score 4.5) - LABORATORY PRACTICES 10% - PROPOSED WORKS 10% The final exam will be in written form and shall consist of 3 PROBLEMS, duration about 2,5 hours, allowed materials: one-page equations formulary, tables-graphics, psychrometric chart and non-programmable calculator. Observations: (1) Students will attend the final exam properly identified by identity card, university card or any other valid official document. (2) Students will have to bring to the exam their own one-page equations formulary, the Moran-Shapiro's tables-graphics of properties, a psychrometric chart and a non-programmable calculator. The tables and graphs will be bound or stapled. (3) The final qualification of the subject is calculated in the following way and a minimum score of 4.5 on the exam is necessary to be able to average with these parts: 80% exam, 10% laboratory practices and 10% proposed works. (4) It's not allowed the use and presence on the examination tables and surroundings of mobile phones, tablets or any other unauthorized electronic devices, neither backpacks or bags which will be deposited at the entrance of the classroom. (5) Students who make use of the Article 2.4 of the Student Evaluation Policy and who request in advance an overall examination of the subject must perform an additional examination, just after the final exam, consisting of 3 or 4 problems on the contents of the laboratory practices and the proposed works during the course. The score obtained at this additional examination will be their final practices-and-works score and will replace any previous qualification that students may have in this section. (6) Article 9.4 of the Student Evaluation Policy will be scrupulously applied in relation to the use of illegal or fraudulent means/devices during the examination. Its non-compliance will imply the exam cancellation and the student will score 0 (fail) in that exam. accordingly, the teacher will send a detailed report on the incident to the Degree Coordinator and to the respective Department Director.
