Description

Mechanisms of propagation and transmission of acoustic waves. Devices for emitting and receiving acoustic waves. Sound waves, electroacoustic transducers, sound, and electroacoustic instrumentation. Recording and reproducing audio.

Professional interest

In this course students will acquire skills necessary to perform measurements, calculations and evaluations useful for acoustic conditioning of rooms, implementation of projects and designs of production and recording radio facilities, conditioning of audio signals, and quality control of such signals.

General competencies

Knowledge about basic material and technologies that enable learning new methods and technologies, as well as providing tremendous versatility for adapting to new situations.
Capacity to resolve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, and to communicate and transmit knowledge, abilities, and skills, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the activities of the technical telecommunication engineer.
Knowledge for performing measurements, calculations, assessments, appraisals, surveys, studies, reports, work plans, and other similar work within the specific field of telecommunications.
Capacity to analyze and assess the social and environmental impact of technical solutions.
Ability to work on a multidisciplinary team and in a multilingual environment, and to communicate, both in writing and orally, knowledge, procedures, results, and ideas related to telecommunications and electronics.
Knowledge, understanding, and the capability for applying the necessary legislation throughout the professional practice of a telecommunications technical engineer, and the ability to deal with mandatory specifications, regulations, and standards.

Specific competencies

Capacity to autonomously acquire new knowledge and techniques suitable for the conception, development, or use of telecommunications systems and services.
Capability to use communication and computer applications (office automation, databases, advanced calculation, project management, visualization, etc.) to support the development and use of telecommunications and electronic networks, services, and applications.
Ability to use computerized tools in the search for bibliographic resources or information related to telecommunications and electronics.
Capability to understand the mechanics of propagation and transmission of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, and their corresponding emitting and receiving devices.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

01Students will be able to understand the process of generation and propagation of sound and the characteristics of the human voice and hearing system
02To perform electroacoustic measurements and to know the appropriate instrumentation for this purpose.
03Study of electroacoustic transducers, their physical principles, characteristics and applications
04Understanding of the properties and benefits of the various microphone and speaker systems. Interpretation of technical characteristics of speaker models and commercial microphones.
05To understand the operation of the main audio recording systems
06To study the behavior of sound inside indoor enviroments and related calculations.

Methodology and grading

Grading

1. The final exam consist of short theoricy questions (40-45%) and application problems (55-60%). Midterm exams will be conducted during the development of the subject. 2. Assistance to the laboratory sessions is mandatory. Laboratory work consists of characterization of systems analyzed in class. 2. The relative weigth in the global mark is: exam, 90%, laboratory sessions, 10%.
