Professional interest

Due to the current relevance of the communications networks of all kinds (Internet, wifi networks, etc. ) that are present in both professional and personal areas, security is an important aspect to be taken into account, given that both companies and individuals are likely to become victims of the attacks in the different communications networks they use. Knowing the dangers that exist and the techniques that can be used to prevent and to combat them is essential for the design and for the proper use of telecommunication networks.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Knowledge about basic material and technologies that enable learning new methods and technologies, as well as providing tremendous versatility for adapting to new situations.
Capacity to resolve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, and to communicate and transmit knowledge, abilities, and skills, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the activities of the technical telecommunication engineer.
Capacity to analyze and assess the social and environmental impact of technical solutions.

Specific competencies

Ability to analyze and resolve interference and electromagnetic compatibility problems.
Ability to apply techniques that networks, services, and telematic applications are based on, such as management systems, signaling and switching, routing, security (cryptographic protocols, tunneling, firewalls, and collection, authentication and content protection methods), traffic engineering, (graph theory, queuing theory, and teletraffic) pricing, reliability, and service quality, in both fixed, mobile, personal, local, or long distance environments, with different bandwidths, including telephony and data.
Ability to design network and telematic service architecture.
Ability to program network and distributed telematic services and applications.

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

The final marks of the subject will have into account two different tests: 1.- A written examination. 2.- The mandatory practices. The final mark is calculated in the following way: Final Mark = 70% Exam + 30% Practices (passing the written exam is required to pass the subject) Extraordinary evaluations (September and December) consist only of a written examination (including questions about theory and practice).

Assessment test characteristics

Test (30 questions, 9 points) and two questions of 0.5 points (1 point).

Correction criteria

In the test, every correct answer adds 0.3 points and every wrong answer substracts 0.1 point. The non-anwsered questions do not substract any point. The written exam mark is the result of adding up the test and the two questions.
