Theory of Physical Education and Sport is a first year module of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. It is a basic and theoretical subject which tries to offer students a wide and critical view of physical activity and sport as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Concretely, this subject studies in depth the generation and diffusion of scientific knowledge about physical activity and sport, the historic evolution and current position of physical education and sport in society, and the theoretical issues concerning physical education as a subject of school curriculum which every teacher should know or consider before programming or teaching.
This subject contributes to consolidate part of the basic knowledge our graduates must know before any later specific or technical knowledge. For instance, it is pointless to educate graduates able to do a bibliographic search but ignorant of what is really the scientific knowledge or a scientific journal, or teachers who are able to program their teaching but do not know why compulsory education emerged or what are the arguments which justify the presence of physical education in school curriculum.
