This group is comprised of four associate professors and one instructor, and activity began 8 years ago when it obtained funding as an emerging group in two projects, one financed by the Generalitat Valenciana and the other through MINECO 2010-2013 REFERENCIA: BIA2009-11605. One current project is examining the uses for palm waste jointly with the GIAAMA Research Group, with the objective of obtaining construction materials from plant residue that require less energy to manufacture and that are easier to recycle. These objectives have been raised due to construction playing an essential part in the problem of sustainable development. To assess construction, an overall energy balance must be carried out, including not only the useful life of the structure in mind, but also its entire construction phase, from the extraction of its materials, their manufacture, the structure's construction, its use, destruction, and recycling; this is what is called the life span. In this case, the overall energy balance and its equivalent environmental pollution leads to a detailed analysis of the construction materials and, therefore, the use of those costing less in terms of energy, or their equivalent in environmental pollution.
