Population modeling and simulation in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics has the function of describing the LADME process (liberation, adsorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) within an organism with statistical models that allow predicting the quantity of a drug remaining within an organism at a given time. It also has the objective of relating exposure of the organism to the drug (plasma concentrations AUC, Cmin, Cmax, Css, etc.) by the detected effects that the drug may have produced. This relationship is expressed by mathematical expressions that allow predicting a drug's effect by determining the concentration remaining within the organism at a given time. These models, besides containing the structural parameters, also contain statistical parameters that describe the variability contained in the model at distinct levels.
The simulation of these models, by considering various scenarios, allows predicting the therapeutic effect and the toxicity, improving and optimizing decision making based on these results.
The group members dedicate their research and professional activities by applying this knowledge in different ways, whether in basic research, through collaboration with pharmaceuticals for drug development, or in clinical application at hospital pharmacies.
This group's objectives include the following:
· Develop pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models in both development as well as commercialization phases, to better learn their characteristics and optimize pharmacotherapy overall within the population.
· Improve pharmacotherapy individualization techniques in hospitalized patients via Bayesian adjustments to optimize doses, therapeutic intervals, and study pharmaceutical interactions.
· Train students in pharmacological and statistical knowledge, as well as offer training in computer programs necessary for applying this knowledge in modeling and simulation.
· Expand this research to private industry through collaboration agreements with pharmaceutical companies and/or hospitals, offering data analysis and report preparation.
