This group is comprised of mathematicians (D. Morales, M.D. Esteban, A. Sánchez), statisticians (I. Molina, A. Pérez), and computer scientists (L. Santamaría, Y. Marhuenda). Its research focuses on small area estimation, linear mixed models, generalized linear mixed models, asymptotic statistics, information theory, and software simulation & development.
From 2001-2003, the group worked on the EURAREA project on small area estimation. Funding for this came from the 5th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The project website is http://www.statistics.gov.uk/eurarea/. Then, from 2008-2010, the group participated in the European SAMPLE project on the estimation of poverty indicators in small areas. Funding for SAMPLE came from the 7th Framework Programme of the EC. Its website is http://www.sample-project.eu/.
This group has eight years of experience (2001-2008) in basic and applied research on small area estimation, and its research abilities are evidenced mainly by its participation in the EURAREA and SAMPLE projects, in R&D projects for the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) from 2004-2008, along with projects for the Valencian Institute of Statistics (2005-2010). The aforementioned projects examined specific issues that Spanish Public Statistics encounters in the systematic implementation of procedures for small area estimation and the development of statistical software.
