Description

Current grapevine cultivation. Physiological principles of cultivation. Soil and climate influence and grapevine propagation techniques.

Professional interest

Knowledge about the nature of the various wine products concerning techniques and grape growing while guaranteeing the development of activities aimed at exploiting natural resources, respecting the environmental sensitivity of the socioeconomic environment of the area.

Specific competencies

Establish procedures for the ecological assessment of byproducts and management of wine waste products.

Understand the necessary raw materials and their characteristics in the development of enological products.
Understand how to utilize the various operations taking place throughout the winemaking process.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

Knowledge about the evolution, current issues and future trends in the cultivation of the winegrape.
Knowing the plant material used in modern cultivation of the vine.
Knowing the characteristics of the structure and form of the vine, as well as its physiology in growth and development.
Knowing the ecological conditions and constraints for growing grapes.
Knowing generically the problem of harvesting, transportation and quality criteria of the grape.
Assessing crop culture, propagation techniques and regulations applicable to the cultivation of the vine.
Learning the training and production systems, as well as the basics of pruning in viticulture.
Addressing the current status of growing vinegrapes.

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

The final exam fwill represent 80% of the final grade. The maximum test score is 10 points. It will consist of 10 short answer questions, so that as a whole is representative of the subject taught and practical cases shown in the various wine farms visited. The maximum score in each of the 10 questions is 1 point. As the course progresses, two or three questionnaires will be assigned to help students to understand viticulture topics. Likewise, an individualized work will be carried out on monitoring phenological growth stages to familiarize students with vine growth develepment. The completion of the same will award the remaining 20% ¿¿of the final grade of the subject.
