The Department of Physiology is dedicated to promoting learning about the normal functioning of living beings, which is fundamental for students of medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, psychology, bioengineering, etc. Department faculty teach at undergraduate levels in the faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Experimental Sciences, and Health and Social Sciences, and it has developed courses from twelve accredited undergraduate programs adapted to the EHEA. In its pursuit of teaching excellence, its faculty employ considerable educational resources to enhance student learning and analytical skills through a robust internship program. The department also teaches in UMH graduate programs, master and doctoral levels alike, including the Doctoral program in Neuroscience and Master’s in Biotechnology. Besides its teaching efforts, department members are actively involved in research areas in a wide range of fields through their affiliations with the institutes of Neuroscience and Biotechnology, primarily in ocular neurobiology, sensory transduction, nociception, electrophysiology of the prefrontal cortex, biophysics of ionic channels, and endocrine cell physiology. The department is also involved in international cooperation projects in underdeveloped countries.
