Professional interest

The course aims to give students a basic knowledge of vehicles, in terms of dynamic performance, components and regulation. This basic knowledge may be useful in the development of any work related to the automotive industry.
In particular, the course explores Car reforms, implementation of technical projects on them and their legalization, which consitituye one career for those Engineers and Industrial Engineers who choose the free exercise of the profession

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Capacity for drafting, signing, and developing projects within the field of mechanical engineering aimed at construction, remodeling, repair, maintenance, demolition, manufacturing, installation, assembly and/or the operation of structures, mechanical equipment, energy installations, electrical and electronic installations, industrial installations and plants, and manufacturing and automation processes.
Ability to manage the kinds of engineering projects described in the preceding competency.
Knowledge about basic and technological material that enable learning new methods and theories, providing versatility for adapting to new situations.
Capacity to analyze and assess the social and environmental impact of technical solutions.
Ability to work within a multilingual and multidisciplinary environment.
Knowledge, understanding, and capacity to apply the necessary legislation in exercising the profession of technical industrial engineer.

Specific competencies

Knowledge about the principles of the theory of machines and mechanisms.
Knowledge and ability for calculating, designing, and testing machines.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

01Knowledge of the basic principles of vehicle dynamics, and their application to performing calculations and analysis related to dynamic behaviour of cars.
02Study design and operation of major systems and components of motor vehicles.
03Knowledge of regulations affecting vehicles, and procedures for the legalization of cars and their reforms.
04Study of standards and guidelines to be followed in conducting vehicle reform projects, and the adquisition of skills in practical application to the most common types of reforms

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Project-based learning: Realization of a project to solve a problem, applying acquired learning and promoting abilities related to planning, design, performing activities, and reaching conclusions.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

Exam consisting of 3 parts: theoretical multiple choice questions, numerical problems on vehicle dynamics, and practical cases related to vehicle reform projects. The final grade will be obtained as a weighted average of the three parts (40% theory, 40% numerical problems, 20% practical cases).

- Supervised realization of one or several practical cases, as a conclusion of the practices about projects of vehicle reforms, to be delivered during the course. Students who have submitted and passed these exercises may use the grade obtained for the calculation of the weighted average of the subject, instead of performing the last part of the exam (20%).
