Professional interest

Operations Management is a basic course of 6 credits, which according to the European Credit Assignment in the UMH equals to 150 hours. The course length is quarterly and it takes place during the first quarterly of the fourth year of studies of the degree.
When the students have access to this course they have already had contact with the business reality and also they got the basic ideas which constitute the fundamentals of the structure and business functioning.
The course aims to familiarize the students with the performance criteria for conducting operations in a company, the decision-makings of the production area, at both, strategic, tactical and operational levels, as well as provide knowledge, tools, skills and abilities that allow them to deepen and develop professionally in this field.
For this, the course is divided into 87 teaching units. The first two introduce the system of production operations at the company, focusing on issues and associated strategic decisions.
Units 3 to 7 focus on issues of tactical and operational nature, linked to planning, programming and control of manufacturing operations, inventory management and replenishment, and some introductory aspects related to the Just in time philosophy.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Ability to use the tools and instruments needed to properly observe the systems under study.
Capacity for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling systems and processes within a framework that guarantee respect for the values, rights and basic principles of the legal system, business competitiveness, protection and conservation of the environment, and sustainable development in the corresponding field.
Capacity to evaluate, optimize, and compare criteria in decision making.

Specific competencies

Capacity to perceive and value the importance of new technologies within the business environment and its economic surroundings.
Capacity to relate knowledge about the operation and registration of business activities, especially in cases of small- and medium-sized businesses.
Ability to manage and allocate resources appropriately.
Capacity to develop and manage the design process and project management.
Ability to manage and administer small businesses.
Ability to integrate into any functional area (in a business or large organization), performing management tasks with ease.

02Analyze the impact of technological development in the evolution of production and manufacturing systems.
03Getting familiar with the systems of planning, programming and control of operations and their application in companies.
04Know the different elements involved in the supply chain and the warehouse and inventory management.
06Search, select and discriminate relevant information about the operations management in companies.
07To develop skills for teamwork, synthesis and resolution of problems and cases in the productive area.

Methodology and grading

Grading

The evaluation of the course will include the following COMPONENTS:

A / practical evaluation that will take place throughout the year.

B / Final examination of theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject.

Assessment test characteristics

A / practical evaluation that will take place throughout the year (up 1.5 points), and is divided into two written exams that may include exercises, questions and cases developed during the course. These tests are not required to pass the course.

B / Final examination of theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject, which will consist of a test and exercises. Evaluation of each part is saved until September.

Correction criteria

- The exam will count 100% of the final evaluation for the course.

- Minimum required 5 points out of 10 in each of the final exam to mediate.

- In the test, two questions answered wrong subtract 1 well (1 wrong answered subtracted 0.5).

- Both practical exams conducted during the course, may add up to an additional 1.5 points maximum (not subtracted and are not mandatory).

Additional requirements

- Students must be identified by documentation.

- It is possible to use calculators (not mobile phones).

- Mobile phones must be turned off.
