Description

Detailed theoretical basis of molecular recognition, with particular emphasis on that related to rational design applied to the field of biotechnology. The knowledge acquired serves for furthering skills in resolving real problems, especially in the prediction and dissection of protein-protein or protein-organic molecule type macromolecular interactions. Specific learning objectives include the following:
a) Use of computational tools for resolving biological and biotechnological problems.
b) Interpretation of prediction results and their transfer to the experimentation laboratory for resolving biotechnological problems.
c) Experimental study of the formation of molecular complexes.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Apply acquired knowledge to solve problems in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to biotechnology and bioengineering.
Ability to integrate knowledge and handle the complexity of making judgments based on information that, although incomplete or limited, includes reflections on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of knowledge and judgments on biotechnology and bioengineering.
Ability to communicate conclusions and the knowledge and latest rationale that sustain them to specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous manner.
Develop the capacity to continue studying in a mostly self-directed or autonomous manner.
Capacity to manage and organize information.
Have the ability to design and propose experiments in biotechnology and bioengineering.

Specific competencies

Knowledge and skills in the use of the most common basic and advanced experimental techniques in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering and their applications for solving specific problems in this area.
Demonstrate skills to quantify phenomena and processes in biotechnology and bioengineering.
Be able to critically interpret and discuss results published and/or disseminated in journals, at conferences, and in other scientific forums.
Technical and scientific competence to ensure the achievement of accurate and reproducible results from which valid conclusions can be drawn in the scientific area of specialization within the field of biotechnology and bioengineering.
The ability to design a research project using the scientific method, compiling and evaluating information critically to solve problems in biotechnology and bioengineering.
The ability to transfer knowledge of biotechnology and bioengineering to finding effective industrial, therapeutic, or preventive interventions, preparing the application request for a patent for a biotechnological invention.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

Describe from a kinetic, thermodynamics and structural perspective the molecular recognition processes.
Experimentally quantify the affinity of a ligand for a therapeutic target.
To know the experimental methods and data analysis to obtain the affinity constant of a ligand to its target, either for a specific or a non-specific binding.
Predicting in silico molecular the energetics of a recognition process from the three-dimensional information of interacting biomolecules.
Being able to propose strategies for optimizing the kinetics and / or thermodynamics of the affinity of a ligand for a target therapeutic certain molecular design.

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

Class attendance.

A parameter called AI (attendance index) is established, which will be calculated proportionally according to class attendance. The AI will have a value between 0 (no attendance) and 1 (total attendance) and will multiply the grade obtained in the part of delivery of work and / or practices.

Presentation of evaluable works and / or practices requested throughout the course (individual or group).

The evaluable works and practices corresponding to each didactic unit will give an average score between 0 and 10 points.

In particular, for the didactic unit 2, a report will be delivered for each of the two practical cases that will be worked on in class. Each of these works will be evaluated with 10% of the grade for the presentation, 15% for the structure, and 75% for the development of the same.

The final grade of the subject will be obtained as the arithmetic mean of the average scores obtained in each of the four teaching units.

To pass the subject it will be necessary to reach at least 5 points in the final grade.
